Winter banden / Winter tires

Last tuesday it starting snowing while we were running in the Olympic Oval. Little did we know how scarry the ride home would be. It was near -10 degrees Celcius and at each traffic sign as well as locations where cars have to use their brakes the friction of braking had melted the snow which was then almost immediately froze again but this time as "black ice." I drove (Sander) and three times did I encounter this black ice and did I loose control of the car almost immediately. Because it happened at very low speeds nothing really dangerous happened. We normally take a route home that takes is "down" Home Road but since everybody was making a U-turn there we figured it was wise to do that as well and take an alternative route home.
It was clear to us that snow-tires are not a luxurious thing to have. Hence, after a little hick-up with Canadian Tire -- Liesbeth made an appointment for yesterday only to be called back with the message that suddenly it turned out they only had 3 Toyota Echo type winter tires in stock and that we had to wait until the end of the week for new ones to come in (btw they sold a single tire after Liesbeth made the appointment, so much for service :-() -- Liesbeth made an appointment with a Toyota dealer and the tires and rims have been mounted today. Just in time because some 10 centimeters of snow fell last night! At night is is -11 to -20 degrees, a little armer during daytime (but beneath -7 or so). So in the evenings at the bus stop, taken the windchill factor into account, it is about -26 graden (success Liesbeth!). We think winter has started here!

Wereldbeker schaatsen. Ice speed skating world cup.

Have you seen us on dutch national television? In the curve just behind the finish line? I am talking about the world cup ice speed skating in Calagry last saturday. I was the fool who was waving with the orange blouse on a stick in the air (some of my dutch friend will recognize this blouse! That is why I took this blouse with me, and just as in the other 'blouse' occasion', I, again, did NOT wear the blouse myself!!). We were in the front row, so we must have been on TV. It was very cosy in the stands, dutch liquorish was passed around (also in the canadian way since they were in a ziploc bag) en the leading language in the stands in our corner was definitely dutch. We met people we only 'knew' from our weblogs, which was really nice. And of course we cheered enormously for our ice speed skaters. I guess Sven Kramer was going so fast in that corner because he thought the noise was horrible there.Of course that's why he ended up with a world record on the 5k. That was fun, witnessing a world record. I think we will go again tomorrow, we liked it a lot. The time before the real reaces start is very interesting too, it is a great oppotunity to watch all the famous skaters and coaches. Sometimes you even have a hard time recognizing them!

After the olympic oval we went to center city: Santa Claus is coming to town tonight! In the Netherlands Sinterklaas is arriving in the country today too, that's why Santa had to make his appearnace too. He arrives early (more than a month before the actual christmas is there!), I guess that is to help the people get through the dark cold november and december days. A lot-lot-lot-lot-lot-lot of christmas lights, blow-up snow man with lights in it, and all other kinds of decorations you can think of appear in the gardens and on the houses these days here. The lightning of the christmas tree/lights in the city was full of 'commercials'. But the lights were beautiful and the christmass carrols were nice, what more do you want?

Schaatsen kopen/Buying speed skates

In ieder geval iets warmer!

Today I bought ice speed skates to skate in the oval at lunch time or in the evenings together with Liesbeth. The skate shop is closeby, so we walked there since the weather was very beautiful today (clear blue sky, nice and sunny). I really enjoyed the walk a lot. We were the only clients in the skate shop, teh service was very friendly. Soon we found out the lady was dutch too, living here in Calgary with here husband (a ISU speed skate starter!) for 25 years already. SO we chatted in dutch, of course. On our way back home we took a d-tour to stop by the "Lazy Loaf and Kettle", a very good sandwhich and bakery shop. We heard about this place from people in our running club. You really have to get this kind of recommandations, because otherwise we would never have entered a place like that. Like a lot of places here, the outside looks very run down in an area with a lot of other run-down places. Once inside, the place was packed at lunch time, we thought it was great! Waiting in line to order somebody offered us her table, since they were leaving soon anyway. Really candain, so much friendliness! Al together, we had a great afternoon!

Sunday we hiked in the mountains near Banf to a little canyon. If there had been more snow in Banf we planned to rent cross country skis, but the snow was not much heavier in Banf than it had been in Calgary so we stick to hiking. After all, 60 km more north the ski area had already opened, so our cross country idea could have worked out! Bundled up very well, the wind up there is chilly!
Hiking a bit further up the mountain we ran into some actual snow on the paths. We even had to slide down some hills on pour behinds because it was so slippery at places.

Uptil last week Liesbeth still biked to work, all dressed up for the colder weather (see picture!). But with the badly lit roads here full of potholes and the fear of not being seen by cars she gave up biking last week (they don't expect people riding their bike in this weather overhere!, that's why the fluor shirt is there!). Now I drive her to work in the mornings ans she takes the bus back home. Anyways, that's warmer!
