Schaatsen kopen/Buying speed skates

Ik heb vandaag schaatsen gekocht zodat ik tijdens mijn werk lunch tijd of gewoon 's avonds met Liesbeth kan gaan schaatsen in the Olympic Oval. De schaatswinkel was redelijk dichtbij huis dus we zijn er heen gelopen. Het weer was prachtig vandaag, d.i., een blauwe hemel plus zonnetje. Ik heb genoten van het wandelen. We waren de enige in de schaatswinkel en we werden heel vriendelijk geholpen. Als snel bleek dat de verkoopster Nederlandse is (ze woont al 25 jaar met haar man, een ISU starter (!) in Calgary). Snel overgeschakeld op praten in het Nederlands natuurijk en een leuk gesprek gehad met de verkoopster. Op de terugweg langs gegaan bij "Lazy Loaf and Kettle" alwaar men brood verkoopt maar waar je ook een sandwich, soep, of iets anders lekkers kunt bestellen en opeten. We wisten van dit tentje van vrienden van de hardloopclub. Normaal zou ik er niet zo snel binnengaan want het is als met zoveel winkeltjes hier gelegen in een niet fraai uitziend heel klein winkelcentrum. Eenmaal binnen waren Lies en ik snel in onze nopjes, druk, heel druk, en heel gezellig. Snel een lekker broodje besteld en terwijl we in de rij stonden werd door de dame achter ons in de rij de tafel aangeboden omdat zij snel wegzouden gaan. Dat is nu echt Canadees! Al met al een heerlijke middag gehad.

En zondag heerlijk in de bergen bij Banf gewandeld naar een kleine canyon. Als er meer sneeuw had gelegen in Banff zelf hadden we langlaufski's gehuurd, maar wandelen vonden we ook prima. Flink inpakken, die wind daarboven is fris! 60 km noorderlijker is het ski gebied al open, dus ons langlauf idee was op zich helemaal niet zo vreemd!
Toen we vanuit Banf wat verder de berg op waren gewandeld lag er een dun laagje sneeuw, we hebben zelfs nog op ons achterwerk over een pad naar beneden gegleden omdat het behoorlijk glad was daar.


Tot vorige week ging Liesbeth op deze manier uitgedost naar haar werk. Maar met die slecht verlichte wegen hier vol met kuilen en duimen dat automobilisten je zien (vandaar dat fluor vestje!) heeft ze dit toch maar opgegeven. Nu Brengt Sander haar 's ochtends, en 's avonds bust ze terug. In ieder geval iets warmer!

Today I bought ice speed skates to skate in the oval at lunch time or in the evenings together with Liesbeth. The skate shop is closeby, so we walked there since the weather was very beautiful today (clear blue sky, nice and sunny). I really enjoyed the walk a lot. We were the only clients in the skate shop, teh service was very friendly. Soon we found out the lady was dutch too, living here in Calgary with here husband (a ISU speed skate starter!) for 25 years already. SO we chatted in dutch, of course. On our way back home we took a d-tour to stop by the "Lazy Loaf and Kettle", a very good sandwhich and bakery shop. We heard about this place from people in our running club. You really have to get this kind of recommandations, because otherwise we would never have entered a place like that. Like a lot of places here, the outside looks very run down in an area with a lot of other run-down places. Once inside, the place was packed at lunch time, we thought it was great! Waiting in line to order somebody offered us her table, since they were leaving soon anyway. Really candain, so much friendliness! Al together, we had a great afternoon!

Sunday we hiked in the mountains near Banf to a little canyon. If there had been more snow in Banf we planned to rent cross country skis, but the snow was not much heavier in Banf than it had been in Calgary so we stick to hiking. After all, 60 km more north the ski area had already opened, so our cross country idea could have worked out! Bundled up very well, the wind up there is chilly!
Hiking a bit further up the mountain we ran into some actual snow on the paths. We even had to slide down some hills on pour behinds because it was so slippery at places.

Uptil last week Liesbeth still biked to work, all dressed up for the colder weather (see picture!). But with the badly lit roads here full of potholes and the fear of not being seen by cars she gave up biking last week (they don't expect people riding their bike in this weather overhere!, that's why the fluor shirt is there!). Now I drive her to work in the mornings ans she takes the bus back home. Anyways, that's warmer!
