Calgary Drop-Inn Centre & Sarah Brightman: Grote contrasten. Big contrasts.

Zondagavond eten geserveerd bij een van de daklozen centra hier in Calgary, gisteravond naar een glamour concert geweest van Sarah Brightman. Ik moet zeggen dat ik dat gisteravond wel als een erg groot contrast ervaarde, echt van het ene in het andere uiterste. Maakt me weer extra dankbaar voor hoe goed we het hebben!

Ik had me mentaal voorbereid voor zondag en verwachtte massa's zwervers en drugsverslaafden, net zoals er in Rotterdam heel wat rondliepen. Het aantal mensen dat er zichtbaar slecht aan toe was in het Drop-Inn Centre viel me daarom juist zo mee, bij misschien wel de helft zou je niet direct zeggen dat ze geen dak boven hun hoofd hebben. En eigenlijk is dat des te schrijnender: er zijn vooral zoveel mensen dakloos (er zijn immers een aantal van dit soort centra, dit was er slechts 1 van), en velen van hebben hebben wel gewoon een baan(tje) maar kunnen zich desondanks geen dak boven hun hoofd veroorloven. Onder deze omstandigheden is het natuurlijk erg moeilijk om je werk fatsoenlijk te doen en je baan te behouden! Ik vind dat dit land toch heel wat beter sociale voorzieningen nodig heeft, dat ieder voor zich principe werkt gewoon niet! Een fatsoenlijke uitkering, huurbescherming en sociale woningbouw (minimaal aanwezig hier) zijn zo gek nog niet!

En dan Sarah Brightman's concert gisteravond hier in Calgary, in het echt klonk ze nog wel beter dan op een CD, werkelijk prachtig! De show was ook mooi, vooral het waterballet bij la luna was prachtig, vond ik. Sarah plus 8 danseressen lagen hierbij eigenlijk op het podium en via levensgrote spiegels werd dit op het podium geprojecteerd. Zeker de moeite waard, ik raad iedereen aan te gaan kijken als je in de mogelijkheid bent. Ik heb genoten!

After yesterdays concert of Sarah Brightman I was thinking about the huge contrast between sundays visit to the Drop-Inn Centre and monday evening glamarous concert of Sarah Brightman. I am happy to be able to attend both, that's for sure. I am so fortunate that we are able to live so well.

I had braced myself to see a lot of misery at the Drop-Inn Centre, comparing their situation with the homeless in Rotterdam, which are mostly drug addicts and mentally handicapped people. So I was amazed by the enormous amount of homeless in the Drop-Inn Centre (it's only one of the centres here in Calgary, more are present here) but also by the large percentage of people that you would not expect to be in this situation. Meeting these people somewhere around town, for about half of them I would not think they were homeless. And that is the most disturbing part: so many people here actually work and still are not able to afford a house. It's very hard to do a good job, or keep your job, this way! I think better social security, renters protection and more lower income housing is really necessary here, these people deserve better!

And then the concert, Sarah sings even better live than on CD, it sounded amazing! Her show was beautiful too, I especially liked the la luna water ballet, in which Sarah and dancers were actually lying on the floor and a huge mirror was used to project their image. I can recommend anyone to go and see this show, I loved it!
