We leren ... We are learning ...

We zitten nu in de kip-ei situatie en gebruiken al onze overredingskracht die we hebben. Men vertelt je dat je al een Canadees rijbewijs moet hebben voordat je een auto verzekering af kan sluiten. Maar als je naar de instantie gaat waar je een rij-examen moet gaan doen vertellen ze je dat je daar veel te vroeg bent. Alleen gesettelde mensen met een huis, bankrekening en gasrekening worden geacht een rijbewijs te komen halen. Alleen al die dingen gaan niet zo gemakkelijk als je geen auto hebt om dat allemaal te kunnen regelen. Sander moet na 3 maanden een rijbewijs hebben. Liesbeth met haar visitor's record mag een jaar rondrijden, precies de maximale termijn dat een visitor;s record geldig kan zijn. Maar zonder zo'n rijbewijs wordt er geen auto verzekering af gegeven, en zonder verzekering mag je je gekochte auto niet mee naar huis nemen.
Enfin, het schijnt dat de officiele regel bij de meeste verzekeringsmaatschappijen is dat je dan na 6 weken je canadese rijbewijs gehaald moet hebben, óf dat ze dat illegaal aan je toestaan om vriendelijk te zijn. We blijven naar de waarheid zoeken en zijn ondertussen blij met onze huurauto, waar we natuurlijk driftig in rondrijden met ons europese rijbewijs. Nog eens gehaal legaal ook. Beetje krom allemaal?
Wordt vervolgd, we zien wel of we inderdaad woensdagavond onze eigen auto kunnen gaan afhalen. Zonder verzekeringsbewijs krijg je die auto namelijk gewoon niet mee, de overheid beschermt je gewoon tegen onverzekerd rijden. Heel goed!

Bovendien leren we onze weg te vinden in de Canadese wereld der mobiele telefonie. Ik ben helemaal bescheiden geworden, want ik begrijp dat hele systeem hier niet echt goed. Opgebeld worden kost net zo veel als zelf bellen, dat telt lekker dubbel op! En je kan uit een enorme hoeveelheid 'calling plans' kiezen, en je kent me, ik ben niet al te goed in het maken van keuzes! Wat ik wel begrijp is dat mobieltjes en bellen hier veel duurder is. Mijn telefoon doet het al, nu de mysterieuze wereld van het opladen van Sander's telefoon nog. Hij had al een beetje ruzie met een of andere operator. P.S. Die mobieltjes gaan we dus alleen maar gebruiken om belangrijke boodschappen te ontvangen of om even heel kort af te spreken om elkaar op een vaste telefoon te bellen. Maar ach, aan die prijzen zijn we eigenlijk al een beetje aan het wennen, een litertje yoghurt kost hier immers ook al 3 dollar 99. De eerste keer in de supermarkt keek ik mijn ogen uit, dit keer niet vanwege de enorme collectie! Ze verbouwen hier graan, laten koeien grazen, en halen olie of gas uit de grond, de rest zal wel geimporteerd moeten worden uit een andere staat, vandaar die prijzen. Maar gelukkig, spijkerbroeken zijn nog steeds goedkoper! Sander heeft ook en shoppers heaven ontdekt voor het outdoor gebeuren, de mountain equipment cooperation. Daar wordt je echt hebberig als je van outdoor spullen en kleding houdt!


We are now in the chicken-egg situation and are using all overredingskracht that we have. Over here, they tell you that tou need to have an Alberta drivers license in order to get a car insurance. But whe you go to the license registry they tell you that you are way too early to apply for a license already. Only people that have setteld, with a home address, a bank account, a gas bill etc., are supposed to apply for their Alberta license. And .. making all the above mentioned arrangements you'd better have a car! The official rule is that with a work permit, which Sander has, you need to apply for a drivers license within 3 months. Liesbeth with her visitors record does not need an Alberta license for one year (that's the maximum time you can have a visitors record). But without a drivers license you cannot get an car insurance, and without insurance you are not allowed to take home a bought car.
Well, it appears that the official rule with insurance companies is that you need a n Alberta license within 6 weeks, ór that they allow you, illegally, to drive around with your european license for the first weeks. We will try to find out the truth in this matter. Meanwhile we happily keep on driving our rental car. By the way, no problem at all with a european license and a rental car, strange he! To be continued ..., we will see whether we can pick up our car wednesday evening. Without insurance they are not allowed to let you take the car, the government is protecting you against uninsured drivers this way, cool!

Furthermore, we try to find our way in the canadian world of mobile phones. It made me feel really small, since I really coul dnot understand this system at all. Receiving a phone call costs the same amount of money as making a call yourself, that's double income for the phone companies! And besides that, there is an enormous amount of calling plans to choose from. And Liesbeth is really not good at making choices! In short, buying a cellular phone and making calls with it is a lot more excpensivce that it is in the Netherlands. Liesbeth's phone works, now we have to manage to put money on Sander's prepaid phone. He was already quarelling with an operator about privacy rules! P.S. We are gonna use our mobiel phones only for important messages and to quickly schedule a land phone call. And we will get used to all these crazy prices! By now, we are used to yoghurt cosing 3 dollar 99. The first time in the grocery store I was astonished. And not about the huge collection, but about what everything costs. The grow grain, raise cattle or get oil or gas from the ground, almost everything else needs to be imported from another state. Luckily, jeans are still cheap! Sander discovered a real shoppers heaven for outdoor gear, the mountain equipment cooperation. Great stuff when you like the outdoors!
