Moose mountain

Het weekend voor we naar NL gingen hebben we op zondag ook nog even gewandeld. Met de auto naar de Elbow Valley (achter Bragg Creeck) en dan 8 km onverharde weg. Als er veel steentjes liggen is dat net of je op een gladde weg met ijs rijdt, je voelt de auto gewoon af en toe naar de zijkant weg glijden. Maar we moesten dat toch voorzichtigjes proberen, er zijn hier zoveel prachtige plakken waar je alleen maar via onverharde wegen kan komen. De weg was meer zanderig dan vol steentjes en gelukkig keihard, het is ons gelukt zonder de bodem van de auto er onder uit te rijden. Toen moose mountain beklommen, een grote grijze kale pukkel waar het vrijwel altijd keihard koud waait (een beetje mont ventoux achtig). Niet al te lang op de top gebleven, het was er te koud en er dreigde onweer. Niet prettig op zo'n pukkel, je bent dan een echt doelwit als het bliksemt. Toch weer zo'n 12 of 13 bergkilometertjes op ons conto geschreven. Terug op de gravel road stak er, heel toepasselijk, een moose (Amerikaanse eland) de weg over. Mooses laten zich niet zo snel zien, dit is de derde tot nu toe in al die tijd hier.

The weekend before our trip to the Netherlands we hiked Moose mountain in the Elbow Valley (past Bragg Creeck). We did the 8 km gravel road to the start of the hike, quite challenging to do gravel roads with our small car! But we managed to not crash the bottom of our car, the road was not too bad (sandy and hard with not too many gravel). I partically hate lots of gravel, that makes the car glide over the road a bit, just like on ice. But we really had to start driving gravel roads, since there is so much nice stuff out there reachable only by gravel roads. We hiked Moose mountain, a bare grey "rock" which is (nearly) always windy and cold. We did not stay at the top for long because of the cold and the darkening (thunder)skies. Not good to be up there on that bare mountain with us being the only targets for lightning! Well, another 12 or so mountain-hike km done, we're doing great in that department this summer. Driving back on the gravel road we were so lucky to see a moose crossing the road. Moose tend to hide pretty well, it was our third moose we saw during our stay here.
